James Byrne was an iconic fiddler from Glencolmcille in south west Donegal who died in 2008.
He rarely left Ireland but the influence of his playing rippled out to the four corners of the Earth.He became one of the greatest exponents of the South West Donegal style of fiddling with an unsurpassed knowledge and a vast repetoire of the music of his native area.
He was the proud custodian of this rich tradition and the likes of Dermot Byrne and Altan brought his tunes to a wider world audience where they are played and appreciated.
