Gabriele Caporuscio

Stranger At The Gate

€16,00

Conceived during the first Covid lockdown in Italy in 2020, Gabriele presented it to us in November 2021.

Gabriele is a fabulously talented multi instrumentalist and the possessor of a sweet, rich voice and , in these parts, he is never treated as a stranger and the gate has long since been opened for him and embraced as one of our own.

There's some corner of a foreign field...

...that is forever Feakle. I was surprised to learn there's a good-going Irish music scene in Rome (at least that's where it was recorded) but shouldn't have been, good music is universal. Gabriele's well-versed in traditional Irish music, both as a listener and as a participant, and does it justice. He pays it the highest respect without being scared or over-reverential, and that's the nice thing about this album. Well-chosen tunes, but the songs are the key for a non-Irish performer. No great surprises, perhaps, but he acquits himself well and sounds entirely natural (I'm old enough to remember Denmark's The Paddy Doyles and France's Dancing Feet, so yes, it can be an issue. The Cliffs of Dooneen as sung by Inspector Clouseau...). Respect rather than mere imitation, what's not to like?
